Abstract

The paper presents the research on the modification lightweight cement composites with organic fillers by fly ash and anionic bitumen emulsion addition. Organic fillers used in composites were: common reed (fraction 2/10 and 10/20 mm) and conifer sawdust (fraction 0/2 mm). The reed Phragmites australis is a notably common plant in Poland that grows on waterlogged lands. This material is renewable, ecological, and while vegetation absorbs carbon dioxide. To determine the influence of two factors on compositesпїЅ properties the rotatable central composite design was prepared. These factors included: content of the fly ash (0 пїЅ 200 kg/m3) and bitumen emulsion content (0 пїЅ 16 % of cementпїЅs and fly ashпїЅs masses). The tested features were as follows: the concrete compressive strength after 28 days of curing, density, frost resistance and water absorption. The results indicate that presence of fly ash and bitumen emulsion improved all analyzed lightweight composites properties. Based on statistical analyze established the best ranges of additionsпїЅ amounts. The presence of bitumen emulsion changes the structure of hardened composites by coating the inside of pores what reduces their surface and disconnects capillary. Beneficial effect of fly ash on the physical-mechanical properties was the effect of improving the tightness of the compositesпїЅ structure. Favorable results of the research might help to propagate the use of lightweight cement composites with organic fillers in Poland and to reduce the extraction of mineral aggregates.
