Abstract

The progressing depletion of fossil fuels necessitates the search for renewable sources of energy around the world. The reconstruction of small hydroelectric power stations is an alternative solution for the sustainable generation of energy. The objective of this study was to reconstruct a small hydropower plant in its former location. The average water flow and annual water flow were calculated, and the results were used to design a water turbine with a gear unit and a generator. An Archimedean screw hydroturbine which delivers satisfactory results at 20% nominal flow was selected due to a low flow rate in the evaluated location. The produced energy will not be sold to the professional power grid, but will be used locally to power a household. The planned hydropower plant can power continuously operating receivers that do not require high-quality power, in particular electric water heaters and lamps. The hydropower plant generates significantly more electricity in winter, and it can also be used to heat the household. The return period on the investment, excluding operating costs, is very short (a little over 3 years), and the hydropower plant has a minimum life of 50 years. Its estimated annual output is 15,000 kWh. One of the key advantages of the hydropower plant is that it can be used to power households in the event of a grid failure.
