INTEGRATED THEMATIC SERVICES IN THE FIELD OF EARTH SYSTEM OBSERVATION- A NATIONAL PLATFORM FOR INNOVATION - SETTING
Abstract
The field of Earth Sciences has always been at the border between fundamental and applied research. If the fundamental part remains the complexity and unpredictability of research on Earth and natural phenomena, development and applied innovation are anchored in society and give a norm of the impact of research for society. The SETTING project aims to coordinate a distributed infrastructure that owns and can provide data, products and services (DPS) relevant to the field of Earth Sciences, to a wide and diverse community of users, through a scalable IT platform. In order to have a clear picture of this vast field of geosciences, the platform will contain and make accessible comprehensive information (e.g. formats, applied standards, their volume, regime and availability) about the main infrastructures and institutions involved in monitoring and research in this field. They will be organized in a database and access (query, selective search, etc.) will be done through specialized tools (web interfaces). This project is built on monitoring infrastructures, data and research available at national level, developed through own financing or from the budget, as well as through the implementation of national projects and /or financed by the EU framework. Furthermore, the project aims to create a framework for governance and management of data and services in the field of Earth Sciences, to ensure their interoperability and integration into a distributed national platform, in order to facilitate innovation and the development of new services based on inter and multidisciplinary data. Also, the IT platform will help researchers, practitioners and administration to critically evaluate the quantity and quality of available data, to identify needs and propose improvement solutions. Last but not least, the IT platform will allow the development of consortiums aiming to solve specific challenges and/or to perform research at national or international level.
