Abstract

Various metallurgical slags are generated in metal extraction, refining and alloying processes. Due to the large slag quantities and the strict erenvironmental regulations, recycling and utilization of these slags are an attractive alternative in order to reduce and eventually to eliminate the disposal cost, to minimize the related environmental pollution, and to save the resource conservation. The global warming effect and natural resource saving are the general environmental topics nowadays. In addition, the land filled with the waste materials has become a significant source of pollution of air, water and soil, and further adversely affects the human health, and the growth of plant and vegetation etc. The most significant area of the utilization of slag materials is civil engineering and especially road construction, because the amount of material used in these structures is very high. Slag isused in all layers of a road structure. Crushed steel slag is used as an aggregate in the asphalt layers. Blast furnace slag has been used as a binding agent with cement in the base course and the sub-base as well as in deep stabilization of soft sub-soils. Crushed slag and blast furnace slag are extensively used as an aggregate in all the structural layers of the road. The construction of roads, street and parking lots on soils subject to settlement and of poor bearing capacity is a technical chalenge, in which the measures available for preventing subsequent settlement include preloading of the substrate in such a way that settlement can be kapt under control. The most common form of such treatment is stabilization, the mixing of binder, traditionally either cement or a mixture of lime and cement, into the substrate material. During experiments slags from blast furnace and cupola furnace (granulated and crushed), from oxygen converter and electric arc furnace were mixed with different portion of cement and water and their binding properties were observed.
