Abstract

Understanding the ability of plants to accumulate trace elements from soils is essential for environmental monitoring and phytoremediation studies. This research investigates the bioaccumulation capacity of the plant Amaranthus viridis and Chenopodium album in relation to the chemical composition of the soils in which it grows. Concentrations of trace elements including Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Co were determined in both plant tissues and corresponding soil samples. To evaluate the ability of the plant to absorb and accumulate metals from soil, bioaccumulation coefficients (BAC) were calculated as the ratio of element concentration in plant material to that in soil. The results demonstrate variable accumulation behavior among the analyzed elements. Amaranthus viridis and Chenopodium album showed particularly strong accumulation for titanium, with bioaccumulation coefficients exceeding 2 in most samples and reaching values above 5 in some cases. The obtained results indicate that Amaranthus viridis and Chenopodium album has a selective capacity for the uptake of certain elements and may serve as a useful bioindicator of soil contamination. The findings contribute to understanding plant–soil interactions and highlight the potential ecological role of this species in monitoring and assessing trace element distribution in soils.
