HUNTING TOURISM IN SLOVAKIA: ECONOMIC IMPACTS AND SUSTAINABILITY PERSPECTIVES
Abstract
This paper examines hunting tourism in Slovakia as an economic activity with implications for sustainable development and environmental policy. Based on statistical analysis, it evaluates key indicators such as visitor numbers, hunting infrastructure, and revenues from fee-based hunting, with an emphasis on their role in regional economies and natural resource management. The study also outlines the conceptual framework of hunting tourism, including its definition, typology, and insights from international research. In the 2022/2023 hunting season, state-managed hunting grounds recorded 2,822 visitors. In 2023, Slovakia had 68,446 registered hunters, including 2,863 women, with an average age of 51.7 years. A total of 1,886 hunting grounds covered 4,457,448 hectares. Revenues from hunting tourism reached €4,936,143 in 2023, highlighting its role as a complementary income source in rural areas. The results indicate a generally positive trend in economic performance, with a temporary decline during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. From a policy perspective, hunting tourism represents a relevant instrument for supporting rural development, internalizing the economic value of ecosystem services, and promoting sustainable resource use. However, its long-term viability depends on effective regulatory frameworks, biodiversity conservation measures, and the alignment of economic incentives with environmental objectives.
