Abstract

The production of a titanium sponge obtained by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride by magnesium is accompanied by the formation of a huge amount of chloride waste. They are annually stored in landfills - storages, polluting the environment. Consequently, one of the topical problems of titanomagnesium production is the processing of chloride waste. In Kazakhstan, there are a variety of sources of chloromagnesium raw materials for the electrolytic production of magnesium, but they are not used in the magnesium industry because of their lack of production. Bischofite and carnallite of the Inder deposit in Western Kazakhstan have a high content of boron and are low-grade. In this work, studies were carried out to purify chloride magnesium melts from impurity components by adding chemically pure magnesium oxide or a carnallite chlorinator slurry containing up to 80-90% magnesium oxide. Sludge refers to the waste of magnesium production and is contaminated with potassium, sodium, magnesium chloride. To activate the surface of the slurry, it was first leached in water or in an acidified 2% brine solution, then the cake was dried and fired at 700 В° C. The developed method consisted in the gravitational settling of a salt melt with heating with the addition of a material containing magnesium oxide. The starting material of the chloromagnesium melts was spent magnesium electrolyte and synthetic carnallite. Carnallite was obtained from the bishofite of the Inder deposit and the spent magnesium electrolyte by recrystallization in an aqueous solution. Pre-tested conventional defenses. Then, as a material containing magnesium oxide, a hydroactivated sludge of magnesium production was used. In the third variant, activated slurry was added with a 2% solution of hydrochloric acid. In a fourth embodiment, chemically pure magnesium oxide was added. Magnesium oxide or activated slurries containing magnesium oxide are good sorbents of impurity components in molten chloromagnesium melts. The content of boron impurities decreases in the spent electrolyte during settling with the addition of hydroactivated sludges in 3-6 times, and in carnallite - in 1,5-4 times, which will allow further processing of the chloromagnesium raw materials of the Inder deposit. Interactions above 100 В° C of magnesium chloride with its oxide form complex chemical compounds of the type MgCl2?Mg(OH)2 and MgCl2?MgO or Mg2OCl2 with a highly developed surface and are good sorbents of impurities in the melt of the salts.
