Abstract

The subject of this paper is the assessment of the influence of the construction and design elements on traffic safety at level crossings in undermined areas. The first part is dedicated to level crossings in the Czech Republic and accident rates at level crossings in the Moravian-Silesian Region. The following part describes the in situ experiment, which was conducted at selected crossings with different types of safety arrangements, intensity of traffic and traffic moments. Our results were compared with the results acquired from level crossings outside the areas affected by mining activities. Results of the analysis show that at crossings in undermined areas it is convenient - in accordance with local conditions - to employ additional safety elements and to pay more attention to the crossing structure and to the adjacent road (pavement).
