Abstract

The Romanian electricity market has undergone substantial structural transformations during the last decade as a consequence of energy transition policies, increasing integration of renewable energy sources and geopolitical developments affecting European energy systems. The period between 2024 and 2025 represents a relevant timeframe for evaluating the evolution of electricity generation, consumption patterns and the balance between supply and demand within the national energy system. This study provides an assessment of the Romanian electricity market by analyzing the dynamics of electricity generation, consumption and electricity traded volumes during the considered period. The analysis focuses on the structure of the national electricity mix and on the contribution of individual energy sources such as coal, natural gas, hydropower, nuclear and renewable energy sources. Time series indicators associated with electricity production and consumption were evaluated using moving average adjustments in order to highlight medium term trends and structural changes within the market. The analysis contributes to a better understanding of the Romanian electricity market evolution and offers insights relevant for policymakers, researchers and market participants interested in the stability and future development of the national energy system.
