COMPLEX ASSESSMENT ON THE MARINE HYDROLOGICAL VARIABILITY REGIME OF THE WESTERN BLACK SEA COASTAL ZONE, ITS SUPPORT FOR THE REGIONAL MARINE SPATIAL PLANNING ACTIVITIES
Abstract
The paper is considering several marine and coastal hydrological studies revealing a high-risk factor in coastal regions due to the climate change and associated storm surge-driven floods, wave and wind damage, and increased coastal erosion and overtopping. The work is focused on advancing the understanding of the impact of climate change and extreme events on the regional and local marine hydrodynamics, including the variability of the meso- and sub-mesoscale marine regime of the western basin of the Black Sea. By improving regional monitoring and forecasting capabilities, the Earth Observation/EO technologies are in line with the needs for considerable research and innovation perspectives, contributing to the risk mitigation actions, potential hazards and disasters rapid assessment, such as coastal erosion/floods, storm surges and industrial/oil-spill accidents. The paper is evaluating the marine and coastal hydrological variability, encompassing certain approaches on marine/coastal waves and currents, for the support of the sustainable growth of marine and maritime sectors, thus being placed with regard to the priority components of the Blue Growth strategy, but also the regional increasing needs of Maritime Spatial Planning activities (MSP Directive implementation), sustainable coastal management activities and maritime safety.
