Abstract

Ostrava city and Karvina city has a long history of mining. Over time in Ostrava there has been a decline in mining activity. But closed coal mine may be performed in the correct disposal of heavy burden on their surroundings. One of the biggest dangers are the outputs of mine gases. If gas leaks into a confined space, there is an accumulation of gas and may result in an explosion. The article presents two cases of methane explosions, which were noticed in the Ostrava-Karvina coalfield. Such an explosion had a devastating effect especially due to the immediate blast effects. The adverse effects transmitted to the wider neighbourhood by seismic waves propagating through the ground. Also the article presents a study of seismic load in the near zone of the experimental methane explosion in building. In an experimental explosion on test subjects it was found that these adverse effects in the form of vibrations are not completely negligible, whereby the explosion in their characteristics resemble the effects of blasting work. So not only the pressure wave but also the vibration caused by the explosion can cause damage to not only the object itself, giving rise to an explosion, but also to objects in the vicinity.
