Abstract

The global level of urbanization is growing. Some estimates indicate that till 2030 the degree of urbanization will reach 83% in economically developed countries. In this context, large urban areas are already facing with problems due to water and air pollution, noise pollution, forming "heat islandsпїЅ, energy consumption, overload of rainwater collection systems and human health degradation. In this paper are presented the benefits of green roofs and the contribution they play in solving problems in urban areas. It is presented the green roofs contribution to energy saving, pollution reducing, quantitative reducing and qualitative improvement of water from rainwater, but also on health, comfort increasing and urban aesthetic improving. In the sustainability context, we can say that the green roofs meet successfully sustainable development principles, namely: - equal opportunities for current and future generations, through conscious and judicious use of natural resources and recycling / reuse of materials, and the use of secondary raw materials and environmentally compatible in construction - durability of construction. - the right to a healthy, safe life, in a welcoming environment for both the present generation and for future generations. -ensure the possibility and obligation of generations to manage natural resource use. at the end of service life, can be easily demolished, the most of the materials can be reused, recycled or re-integrated into the natural environment.
