Abstract

The "Drmno" coal strip mine is one of the most important factors of the electro-power system of Serbia. The coal exploitation has taken place over 20 years (since 987), with the exploitation of 6В·106 tons in 2007. The coal exploitation is complicated by the waterbearing character of the roof sediments, which is the consequence of the vicinity of the rivers Danube and Mlava. Groundwater protection is performed using the wells distributed in several lines (about 200 wells). Current solutions were formed either without the proper hydrodynamic analysis or based on "ad hoc" mathematical groundwater models of insufficient reliability for the design purposes. As the mine progressed towards the river Danube, the problem of mine dewatering is intensifying and the question of its future concept is raised. Up to 2005, there was no proper hydrogeological monitoring. Since then, the establishment of a quality groundwater monitoring enabled creation of quality hydrodynamic model of the mine. The model was finished by the end of 2008. Before its completion, geological and hydrogeological models of the mine sediments were formed, and the analysis of all the factors of the groundwater flow. The model is permanently updated with new monitoring data. At this moment, this model is used for the current coal exploitation monitoring, analysis of the dewatering system operation, simulation of possible situations in the field, and long-term prognosis for the mine development.
