SOME REMARKS ON EXPERIENCE BASED GEOTECHNICAL EDUCATION
Abstract
Geotechical engineering combines strict mechanical rules with a random nature of natural soils. That is why reliability-based approach to geotechnical design is still not fully appreciated by the engineers. Large variability of soil parameters and uncertainty of computational models emphasize the importance of experience and engineering intuition followed by over-standard number of testing procedures of both: the soil and the structure. Conventional university education may provide the student with the knowledge about facts, properties and physical rules but (at least in standard conditions) cannot give the student sufficient experience that has to be gained in practice. Such skills may be obtained via small-group practical courses offered at the universities in addition to their existing education system. Usually, these are summer schools or training periods offered to limited groups. It must be accepted as the rule that the group is mobile (most of the test can only be performed on the building site) and relatively small (for safety reasons). As the procedures and methods are very specialized, students are often gathered from different countries. That forms a platform for both: technical education in cooperation with companies (necessary to provide the access to building sites) and internal exchange of ideas inside the group of students with different background and local experience. Some selected examples of Wroc?aw University of Technology experience with specialized practical geotechnical education of Portuguese, French and Russian students were gathered in the paper. Authors will also give some recommendations for the exchange, mobility programs and training periods for both: students and teachers.
