Abstract

Cultural ecosystem services are defined as all non-material services and benefits provided by ecosystems that have a symbolic, cultural or intellectual importance [1]. According to the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES), natural elements provide people with opportunities to gain cultural goods or benefits. In order to fulfil diverse needs and expectations of an urban community, it is necessary to have a wide range of different spaces that can satisfy various needs of various users - from children to adults and elderly people. In this paper, we assess selected green spaces in the city of Nitra in two residential areas along the river Nitra ? 1) Chrenova (P1, P2 and P3) on the eastern side of the river, and 2) Wilsonovo nabrezie (Wilson Riverfront) (P4, P5, and P6) on the western side of the river. We use a methodological approach determining the degree of recreational cultural ecosystem service (CES) provision by urban green spaces [2]. Results of this research show the quality of green spaces and the degree of recreational CES provision in housing estates of Nitra. The methodological approach includes assessment of the following aspects and features of green spaces: a) quality of vegetation, b) overall design, c) spatial features, d) management and e) infrastructure [2]. The methodological approach of assessing the quality of green spaces and the degree of recreational benefits builds upon the existing method of ecosystem service assessment [3]. Results of this research show that the selected green spaces do not meet the quality needed for fulfilling the recreational needs of inhabitants of the assessed housing estates.
