Abstract

The paper presents the research methodology of an interdisciplinary project dedicated to the study of the land-sea interaction along the southern part of the Western Black Sea coast. The research area covers the Medni Rid part of the Strandzha coast, which provides favorable conditions for coastal navigation and port activities since ancient times. The project aims to establish the real factors and the regular features in the behavior of local communities in the context of land-sea interaction in the Western Black Sea coastal area from the Late Bronze Age to the end of the 17th century. The integrated and interdisciplinary approaches are the main methods applied to achieving the research goal. The article discusses the objectives and the advantages of the geoarchaeological methods and the GIS application in integrating geological, palaeogeographic, historical, and archaeological data. Multidisciplinary investigation of ancient archaeological sites is a key research field for systematic investigation. The research used several methods characteristics of the Earth sciences as well as the humanities. The aquatory of the Sozopol peninsula is one of the most convenient for a port on the entire Western Black Sea coast. Over the centuries the port has been constantly moved. The reasons can be any, but they are most likely related to changes in the coastline that have occurred because of sea level rise, abrasion, earthquake, etc.
