BASIC ASPECTS OF SEISMIC ACTIVITY IN ALBANIA AND TTS SURROUNDING DURING 2020 YEAR
Abstract
The main cause of Albanian seismicity is the collision of Adria microplate with the Albanian orogeny. Albanian territory is characterized with high level of seismic hazard in the Europe. It is very important to emphasized seismic zone of Durres that generated a strong earthquake M6.4 on 26 November 2019. During the 2020 year, seismic activity at the Albania territory and its surroundings was characterized by a normal seismic activity. Earthquakes foci are concentrated mostly along the five active fault zones: Fieri-Elbasani-Dibra, Durresi-Lezha, Kurbnesh-Skavica, Korca-Leskovik and Ionian fault zones. The increase in seismic activity was recorded in the Durresi Lezha and Fier-Elbasani-Dibra seismogenic zones of Albania, expressed respectively: by the Durres earthquake ML4.9, on January 28 which is the aftershock of the strong earthquake of 26 November 2019 and by the Mavrova earthquake (in North-Macedonia in vicinity to Albanian border) ML5.1 on November 11. On the Albania and its surrounding territory were located 1490 earthquakes with running magnitude 0.5 to 5.1 (Richter), with average depth 13 km and maximum depth 82 km, 141 of them with magnitude ML > 3.0 (Richter), 17 of them with magnitude ML > 4.0 Richter and 6 of them with magnitude ML > 4.5. About 14 seismic events were felt by population of Albania. The focal mechanism parameters of moderate earthquakes occurred during 2020 (ML>4.5) can be used to shed light on the seismotectonics of their areas and the current stress field. This article gives the level of seismicity of this year and some of its main features.
