Abstract

Detailed petrographic studies, whole rock geochemistry and in situ U-Pb geochronology of syenite from Iwo area of the southwestern Nigeria has been performed. The results indicate that the syenite is metaaluminous belonging to the calc-alkaline magmatic series whose parental melt was derived fr om melting of the upper mantle/lower crustal source. Precise U-Pb dating of zircons is done by LA-ICP-MS and age of 625 В± 6.1 Ma is obtained. The field and petrological i nvestigations show that the syenite was emplaced syn-kinematically while the Pan-African tecton o-thermal deformation was still active.
