Abstract

To many countries heavy metal pollution is a problem related with areas of intensive mining activities and industry. Extensive exploitation of metallic minerals in the territory of Kosovo from antiquity until now days effected on environmental and river flows plane pollution. During September/November 2006 in Kizhnica/Artana was done stream sediment sampling (304 samples) main attention on precious metals (Au, Ag) and base metals (Zn, Pb, Cu). The stream sediment survey area is situated ESE of Prishtina with an extend of approx. 26 km in NS and approx. 38 km in E-W direction, named area I Kizhni\cc\"e / Ki\vsnica - Artan\"e / Novo Brdo With the purpose of viewing the impact of mining activities in river flows and pollution with heavy metals, on this study we are presenting the impact of mining activities of Artana mine in Kriva Reka river flow plane. Regarding this we have taken for study only samples analysis of “Kriva Reka” River flow plane, total number of samples is 42. Sample locations have been selected considering (in most cases) the following conditions: Above the inflow of a subsidiary stream, One sample of each streams Along the river sample distance was less then 2 km Catchments area size was approximately 1 - 3 sqkm Combined with the taken samples, an outcrop description was done using data capture forms holding the following facts: sample no., date of capture and name of geologists, specific sampling type, coordinates, altitude, and coordinate determination method, detailed description of the outcrop (locality, lithology, stratigraphy, valley type, taken photographs, general comments etc). The results achieved by the analysis show that, mine activities affected on the environment and river pollution, especially old tailings. As a conclusion can be first, rehabilitate old tailings of mining activities, and observation the possibility of finding of new tailing positions where is less exposed of weathering erosion.
