ASSESSMENT OF THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF EXTERNAL WALL STRUCTURES IN INDIVIDUAL HOUSING CONSTRUCTION IN SLOVAKIA

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to implement parts of the requirements of the European Green Deal in individual housing construction in Slovakia. The research methodology consisted of two parts: an analysis of selected building materials and a case study evaluating the possibilities for selecting materials with a more favourable carbon footprint. The building materials used for the construction of perimeter walls - YTONG, CLT panels, NOBASIL, and ISOVER - were evaluated based on their Global Warming Potential (GWP) values obtained from Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). One of the boundary conditions of the research was to achieve the energy performance of the building in class A0. The main contribution of this research is to demonstrate how small investors can effectively reduce the embodied carbon of residential buildings through the selection of appropriate building materials. By examining current practices, the study aims to contribute to a shift in the understanding of sustainable construction and addresses a gap in the integration of low-carbon construction principles into individual residential construction in Slovakia. The proposed perimeter wall alternatives provide a practical approach to selecting suitable construction solutions, and the case study may serve as an example of implementing low-carbon construction in the residential building sector.
