Abstract

The intensification of mining requires the increasingly widespread use of a high-performance transport system, i.e. the conveyor transport. At the same time, the requirements for its basic traction and load-bearing element, namely the conveyor belt, which is used in the extraction of mineral raw materials by applying both underground and surface methods, are rising. Increasing the productivity of those transport systems and longer transport distances lead to an increase in the load to which conveyor belts are exposed; that requires the use of more durable belts. Therefore, the study of functional, physical and mechanical properties of conveyor belts remains relevant. Transported materials meet the cover layer, which is consequently damaged as a result of tribological interactions combined with tensile and dynamic loads. The main aim of this paper is to analyse mechanical properties of rubber cover layers of conveyor belts; specifically, the tensile properties were investigated. Based on the experimental results, the stress and strain characteristics - tensile strength and elongation - of 3 different types of fabric belts were evaluated. The results obtained will contribute to improving the sustainability of mining activities not only from an economic perspective but also from an environmental perspective, given the quality of the conveyor belts deployed.
