Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to study network simulation and modeling software and determine which tools are most suitable for designing a corporate computer network of commercial enterprise. The permanent improvement of automation tools, the integrated implementation of information processing and transmission systems in the enterprise structure require knowledge of all the advantages and disadvantages of new technologies to the smallest detail, the ability to use them as intended and, most importantly, effectively. This paper describes the investigation and compares the key features of available software tools for various types of computer network modeling, such as Arena, ExtendSim, OPNET/Riverbed Modeler, and others. Network simulation and modeling software systems are the tools that can be useful for any corporate network administrator, especially when designing a new network or making drastic changes to an existing one. The main feature of simulation modeling is that it alternately reproduces events that occur in a real system. Modern simulation and modeling tools allow determining the major network characteristics, an optimal structure, required network equipment, and possible resources for future development. The advantage of network modeling is that there is no need to purchase expensive equipment because the program simulates its operations and accurately reproduces all the main features and parameters of the selected equipment. This combined simulation avoids the costs resulting from additional computer network restructuring in the future.
