Abstract

Green roof or living roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium. Sedum species are low-growing succulent plants that can grow rapidly when water is available yet also survive long periods without water. Green roofs are becoming increasingly popular in many countries, but in Kosovo the use of green roofs is a new practice. The aim of this study is to determine Sedum vegetation characteristics on extensive green roof in Kosovo urban areas, influenced by different planting distances cultivated at substrate depth 120 mm of Sedum species. During our study we used three Sedum species:Sedum album (L.), Sedum acre (L.),Sedum rupestre (L.), plants are planted in native soil substrate, which consist of three components:(50% soil:25% peat:25% sand). Sedum species are planted in three different planting distances (25 plants for m2, 20 plants for m2 and 16 plants for m2). The three distance planting types each had three replicates which were installed randomly within the respective location and solar exposure. Seedlings of Sedum were planted on 15 May and have been studied over the years 2014-2015, and evaluated for groundcover density, ample horizontal vegetative coverage per m2, shoot and root biomass. From this study, it was shown that the three planting distance factors studied in substrate depth 120 mm had a significant difference in horizontal vegetative coverage on green roof per m2 for three Sedum species.
