A STUDY ON THE DEPICTION OF WATER BODIES AND WATERCOURSES IN CADASTRAL MAPS
Abstract
Cadastral maps play an important role in the land administration system (LAS), enhancing the certainty and security of legal proceedings. Under ideal conditions, the content of cadastral maps should accurately reflect the “actual state†(in the field) and the “legal state†(as per legal documents) and correspond with the written component of the LAS. This article analyzes the depiction of watercourses and water bodies in cadastral maps. Their content, level of detail, and method of cartographic interpretation vary depending on the mapping campaign in which they were produced. The study follows two main lines of inquiry. The first line is based on a descriptive classification of the technical regulations of the four mapping campaigns. A visual cartometric analysis evaluates maps from these campaigns using selected criteria and a validation procedure. The second line of inquiry is a geospatial analysis of the representation of hydrologically dynamic features in cadastral maps. The geospatial analysis assesses the current state of the representation of water bodies and watercourses in cadastral maps. The reasons for geospatial inconsistencies in the analyzed data are explained in the conclusion. Solutions for LAS are discussed. For the visual and geospatial analyses, analog and digital data available in archives, databases, and information registers administered by the Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre Authority of the Slovak Republic, the Slovak Water Management Enterprise, a state enterprise, and the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic were used. A total of 11,085 square kilometers of cadastral maps have been classified.
