STUDY OF PERFORMANCE INDICATORS AT A WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT IN ROMANIA
Abstract
Considering the increasing generalized pollution and tightening of environmental protection regulations, it is necessary to constantly optimize the treatment technologies, in order to meet the quality standards when discharging wastewater into surface water. The paper presents a study on a wastewater treatment plant in Romania that serves a municipality with a population of approximately 400,000 inhabitants, having a sewerage network working in a unitary system. The main indicators of the waste water quality (flow rate, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and total suspended solids) were monitored over a period of one year, both in the influent and in the effluent of the plant. The study evaluates how the periods with large amounts of precipitation influence the concentration of the input and output parameters and also how the decreased organic loading affects the efficiency of different stages of treatment. The causes that led in certain cases to decreased treatment efficiency were identified. At the end of the paper, the overall efficiency was assessed and recommendations were made regarding the optimizing of the treatment process and the operation of the corresponding equipment.
