DETECTION OF BOULDERS IN UNDISTURBED SANDY SOILS USING GROUND PENETRATING RADAR
Abstract
In this study, we present series of GPR experiments to identify and solve problems, which might be encountered while carrying out GPR survey in sandy soils for various purposes. Study was carried out in the Smeceres sils sand-gravel quarry, which is located in the Madona-Trepe ice-marginal ridge in Eastern Latvia. This specific quarry was selected as a study site, because it has a boulder pavement located in its uppermost part. Two similar experiments were carried out in dry (after long period of dry weather conditions) and wet (after heavy rainfall) soil conditions using 2 GHz, 900 MHz and 500 MHz antennas. In each experiment three parallel 9 meters long GPR profiles with spacing of 0.3 meters were recorded. Results show that around 70% of boulders in each experiment can be associated with zones of increased GPR signal reflection amplitudes, but it is nearly impossible to locate individual boulders. Several boulders did not cause any visible reflections. In conclusions possible reasons of such problems are given, and solutions of GPR mapping methodology are described.
