Abstract

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the negative impact of the impoundment Po?a on landscape adjacent to it. The impoundment is used for the deposition of coal ashes and other sludgy waste material from industrial processing of former Chemko Str??ske factory as well as the deposition of sludge water from waste water treatment plant. Both published and unpublished materials were used to support our research. The field trip involved data collection and was designed to find out the real condition of the impoundment and take photographs to document the problems. We focused on the impact of the impoundment on the contamination of the surface water, ground water and the biota. The contamination of the area by arsenic, zinc, and other heavy metals is alarming. Contaminated water runs across the impoundment and flows in the Kyjov brook and then flows into the Ondava river. The impact of the industrial activities on biota have been well-documented. In the 1990s, the ducks living in the area nearby were found to be contaminated with higher concentrations of PCB. Although the transport of zinc and arsenic from the impoundment sediments to plants is not intensive, some plants did contain 100 times greater As concentrations. The data analysis reveals the environmental burden for the landscape. The summary statistics and final assessment show the discrepancies between the interpretations of the seriousness of risks provided by several research institutions and the impoundment operator.
