THE USE OF THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD IN THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE FOUNDATION OF A BRIDGE STRUCTURE OVER THE DANUBE RIVER

Abstract

The article dealing with optimizing of the foundation method a statically complicated bridge structure founded in difficult engineering-geological conditions. The Finite Element Method (FEM) was used to optimize the foundation method. Its mathematical apparatus makes it possible to take into account and define very complex and difficult boundary conditions of the solved engineering problem (material, geometric, static, etc.). The analysed bridge over the Danube River is located in Dunaujvaros (Hungary), which is approximately 80 km south of Budapest. The main bridge field of a steel arched bridge with a span of 302.8 m is placed on two bridge pillars (No. 14 and 15). The goal of optimization geotechnical calculations was to assess the foundation of bridge pillars No. 14 and 15 according to the 1st and 2nd group of limit states. Based on the evaluation and analysis of the obtained results have been optimized length of the pile and method of improving the properties of the subsoil soils (e.g. grouting) with respect to the stability and settlements of the bridge pillars.
