APPLICABILITY OF GRIDDED CLIMATE DATA IN TREE-RING STUDIES OF LARCH FROM SOUTHERN PART OF POLAND
Abstract
Gridded climate data are valuable source of information that can be used in various fields of environmental studies. One of the example is dendroclimatological analysis, where climatic data are essential part of the study. These data are especially useful when there is a lack of weather station data for the study area, the available data are incomplete or their time span is insufficient. However the accuracy of gridded data can be sometimes questionable. In this study gridded data planned to use in dendroclimatological analysis of larches from southern Poland were checked in order to evaluate their precision and usefulness. We compared the average monthly temperature and monthly precipitation data from 10пїЅ x 10пїЅ grid network (CRU TS v. 1.2, [7]) with data from several weather stations for southern part of Poland. The analysis was performed for weather stations with possibly long and complete data series, mainly started in 1950пїЅs or 1960пїЅs. The gridded climate data span the period 1901-2000. As a methods linear Pearson coefficient, nonlinear Spearman and Kendal coefficients, ANOVA, determination coefficient for regression models and similarity measures were used. Generally, the results showed usefulness of the climatic gridded data in planned dendroclimatological studies. However in some cases, especially when study site altitude significantly differ from the average altitude value for the corresponding grid box, the height correction is necessary.
