Abstract

By the example of the new highway project in Moscow, the paper scrutinizes in detail the evaluation procedure of the differential and integral economic risk caused by geological hazards. Based on the analysis of engineering geological conditions at the construction site as well as the projected design for highway and bridges, the hazard of landslides, karst and suffusion processes and waterlogging was assessed. It is proved that for any scenario of landslide process (either deep or shallow landslides), the risk of damage for the scrutinized engineering structure by this geohazard is almost zero. Probable manifestation of karst and suffusion is revealed for the 520-m-long highway section. Waterlogging does not pose any hazard to the highway due to its engineering protection measures, i.e., backfilling, drainage systems, waterproofing; wall-in-trench technology. Bridge footing with pile foundation are the engineering structures that may be subjected to aggressive corrosion of surface- and groundwater. We have calculated the geological risk (both differentiated and integral) from karst and suffusion processes and waterlogging. It shows that geological hazards affecting the structure may shorten its operation period by 11 years. With geohazards disregarded, the projected period of highway operation without overhaul is estimated at 50 years. The probable economic loss from geohazard manifestation was assessed for the given running period in percentage of the total structure cost.
