MONITORING THE IMPACT OF THE ACID TARS LAGOONS ARISING FROM THE FORMER PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN THE CENTRAL SLOVAKIA
Abstract
This paper discusses the preliminary results from the monitoring project of two contaminated sites (Predajna I and II) related to the former petrochemical industry (refinery) in the central Slovakia, and the waste generated by this industry. Waste product arising from this process are acid tars called ?gudron? in the Slovakian terminology. Due to the nature of deposited waste with a very variable composition (sulphuric acid, sulfonates, chlorides, mineral oils, etc.), both sites pose risk, or even potential threat to people and to the nearest environment. The elevated concentrations of TOC, COD, chlorides and sulphates were determined in groundwaters in indication area of the landfills. On the other hand, the results showed that there was no significant hydrocarbon contamination (non-polar extractable substances, PAH, chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons and PCB) of groundwater within the monitoring objects. It is assumed that the bottom of the landfills is sealed with a pasty tar. Comparing historical data from 1985 to 1986 with the analyses performed within this study (2015-2018) showed a significant decrease in some of the indicator parameters (chlorides, sulphates, COD and surfactants). Nowadays, remediation of both sites is under preparation.
