Abstract

The one of most important topics regarding to the operation of long stroke marine engines is maintaining the serviceability of engines cylinder liners and piston rings. During operation of engines cylinder liners lubrication to be properly adjusted by adjustment of cylinder oil feed rate to maintain proper wear rates. This process must be monitored to avoid engines failures. Close monitoring wear of liners and piston rings gives opportunity to optimize cylinder lubricating oil feeding rates to reduce cylinder oil consumption. This paper presents the application of the scavenge drain oil monitoring system as a tool to control of proper lubrication of long stroke marine engines cylinder liners. Systems of selected engines cylinder oil lubrication has been analyzed using spectral analysis under piston scavenge drain oil. The obtained results shown that scavenge drain monitoring system is an excellent tool to control lubrication of liners and gives answer if reduction of cylinder lubricating oil feed rate is possible. Using this tool engines operators are able to maintain proper cylinder liners and piston rings condition and keep reasonable wear out rates of liners and piston rings. Reduction of cylinder lubricating oil consumption makes real reduction of emission of harmful substances to environment, originate from unburnt lubricating oil or scavenge drains.
