BIOENERGY DEVELOPMENT ON RURAL AREAS IN POLAND
Abstract
Diversification of rural resources in Poland has the potential to create great opportunities for innovation, development and of renewable energy sources and the development of non-agricultural activities. Over 90% of the territory of Poland is a rural area characterized by specific conditions. The potential of biomass that is usefoul for energy purposes in Poland is among the highest ones in the European Union. This creates the possibility of the use of biomass for the production of liquid fuels (bioethanol, biodiesel), biogas, electricity and heat from solid biomass. The bioenergy sector in Poland is supported to a big extent by means of the rural development policy measures, especially with regard to the supply and use of biomass in the form of byproducts, wastes, residues and other non-food raw material. The market of solid biomass for the power industry began to develop from 2003 at a rapid pace and mainly concerned forest biomass. Production of agricultural biogas is recognized as one of the most promising modes of using biomass resources for energy-related purposes. The article presents, in particular, the market potential of agricultural biomass, its trends and the current state of use, evaluating ways to use biomass in terms of economic and environmental, as well as the current and future role in the implementation of bioenergy targets for renewable energy.
