Abstract

The Yarpuz (Kakliktas) bauxite deposit is located in Antalya region southern Turkey; 35 km to the south of Seydisehir and 180 km to the north of Antalya. It is one of the bauxite deposits with the highest silica modulus (Al2O3\%60.26 /SiO2\%1.74=34.63) outcropping in the Central Taurus Mountains. The Upper Cretaceous Katrangedigi formation forms the basement and, comprises carbonate rocks. The bauxites were deposited in the paleo-karstic depressions developed at the upper part of the KatrangediДџi carbonate and, was overlain by the carbonate of the Upper Cretaceous (Senonien- Maestrichtien) Dogankuzu formation. The paleo-karstic depression bearing ore has a NE-SW aligment and ellipsoidal shape with 150 m of length and 30 m of width. Its average depth is 4 m and its deepest part is 12 m. The lense shaped ore deposit dips in accordance with the dip of limestone (N280W, 280SW). While the base of the ore deposit is highly irregular, its top is relatively flat. Bauxite cemented brecciated level (approximately 40 m) occur at the base of the ore deposit. With this shape, the ore deposit can be classified as pocket type allocton-semi allocton ore deposit. In the deposit, two types of elements, mostly massive and partially ferro bauxites have been identified. The massive bauxite is uniformly distributed within the deposit. Whereas, the ferro-bauxite is mainly condensed at the bottom of the deposit. The mineralogical analyses showed that the most common aluminum ore mineral is boehmite and, in lesser amount, diaspore and gibbsite accompany it. There are also kaolinite, hematite, goethite, pyrite, quartz, calcite, anatase (rare amount), rutile (rare amount), tridymite (rare amount) and, markazite, lepidocrocite, pyrolusite and psilomelane in very small amounts. Based on these data, the deposit is classified as boehmitic-type deposit.
