Abstract

The impact of climate change on agricultural sector has grown in the last decades from local to macro-regional scales. Based on 14 indicators, a comprehensive image regarding the interrelationships between socioeconomic and climatic factors was obtained for characterizing the agricultural sector from Teleorman County, Romania during 6 years. An analysis of available time series was performed to obtain descriptive, associative, and comparative statistics of the data set. Pearson correlation was used to estimate the strength of the tested linear relationships. A matrix of correlations was presented to show the potential associations between the climatic variables and prices of various cash crops. The results showed that year 2012, reported as the hottest year from 1961 to 2015, had a direct significant influence on 10 indicators recording maximum population, arable land, areas cultivated with wheat, price of sunflower at national level and highest euro quotation. The rapid alternation between severe heat waves and drought determined the significant reduction of cultivated areas and yields, the population employed in agriculture, and rising of the prices per unit of major crops production from 2012 to the following years. Therefore, the adaptation of agricultural cropping technologies to the impact of extreme weather must be based preponderantly on the experience gained from the reaction to extreme weather events by implementing adaptation measures resulted from new research performed on the environmental effects at regional and local level, and the behavior of new genotypes created for current and foreseeable climate changes.
