Abstract

Brief The JOINTISZA Project (Strengthening cooperation between river basin management planning and flood risk prevention to enhance the stats of waters of the Tisza River Basin) creates transnational cooperation for next two years in the largest sub-basin of the Danube Basin. The project is funded through the Interreg VB Program of the European Union, the Danube Transnational Program (DTP 2014-2020) component, Priority Axis 2 (Responsibility for Environment and Culture in the Danube Region), Component 2.1 (Strengthening Transnational Water Management and Flood Prevention), has a duration of 30 months (January 2017 - June 2019) and brings together 17 partners from five countries (Romania, Hungary, Serbia, Slovakia and Ukraine) that have surfaces in the Tisa river basin. The three partners participating in the project from Romania are: Ministry of Waters and Forests, National Administration "Romanian Waters", National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management. The long term goal of the project is to generate momentum for a better implementation of Floods Directive 2007/60/EC and the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC, the project involves four types of target groups: the national water administrations, water research institutes, international organizations and other interested stakeholders, NGOs. The project aims is to improve the status of water in the basin by strengthening transnational cooperation and improving the interaction between stakeholders and authorities that manage and monitor the same river basin in cooperation. In the same time, the project will identify solutions to common challenges in the entire basin (over exploitation, water regime modification, contamination and growing flood events amplified by climate change negative effects). As the result of the transnational cooperation the main output of the project is the final draft updated Integrated Tisza River Basin Management Plan, which already includes the main aspects of the Flood Risk Directive.
