Abstract

The challenge for the International Maritime Organization IMO is to reduce and eliminate any adverse impact by shipping on the environment by increasing the emphasis on the role of the human element in environmentally sound shipping. Nautical students become familiar with the international regulations for the prevention of air pollution from ships such as the revised Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention during the IMO courses [1] or other subjects (i.e. Maritime Law) that are mandatory for obtaining the certificate of competency as Officer on Watch OOW. Environmental awareness and climate change education is therefore important for nautical students. In this study we suggest a new lecture plan on air pollution and climate change and analyse a possible way to include it in the Marine Meteorology and Hydrology course, which is taught during two semesters at undergraduate level. The course plan follows the IMO model course and it has been revised and updated to cover the amendments adopted by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers STCW. The lecture plan refers especially to the origin and properties of the greenhouse gases and other polluting substances in air emissions from ships and can be integrated in a lecture about the ?Atmosphere, its composition and physical properties?, which is a compulsory topic according to the IMO model course 7.03 [2].
