A NEW APPROACH TO GREEN HYDROGEN RESEARCH - CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS TOWARDS EMISSION REDUCTION AND A CLEANER MARITIME TRANSPORTATION
Abstract
This paper aims to present an innovative approach to maritime transportation solutions and the need to minimize gas emissions and fuel consumption through green hydrogen research and substitution. Given its critical role in global commerce, maritime transportation has been a key factor for the past decades, specifically regarding the optimization of ship routing. The traditional focus on minimizing distance has been supplemented with modern, sustainability-driven objectives, including greater attention to fuel consumption and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. The recent rise of green hydrogen as a leading solution for decarbonizing energy systems necessitates an attentive examination of their various production methods, economic factors, and environmental impacts. A comprehensive understanding of this is essential for all parties involved, and particularly for informing the decisions of political and business leaders, as this problem has reached the attention of organizations worldwide. Also, one of the main goals of this study is to efficiently present the possibility of converting the ocean's hydrokinetic energy into electricity, maximizing the generated power. To meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, the shipping industry must urgently reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, this paper also brings into attention recent global trends and breakthroughs in green hydrogen research, corresponding to the maritime industry. This necessitates the development of new, clean energy sources. Consequently, there is growing interest in developing hybrid projects that integrate solar, wind, and wave energy to reliably harness all three renewable resources simultaneously. Although battery and hydrogen technologies are progressing, battery-electric solutions are currently more mature. Government support, through policies and procurement, is essential to help these technologies become a widespread reality in the maritime sector, also representing a necessary asset for the transition to sustainability.
