IMPROVING THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT OF PIG FARMS
Abstract
The authors of this paper review the main factors of management in general (planning, organization, leadership and control) and environmental management in particular (environmental impact assessment, environmental legislation, pollution control, resource conservation, sustainable development, waste and wastewater management), with a focus on pig farms and their characteristics (biosecurity and health, growth and reproduction and reproduction, housing and food and water management, feed and feed management facilities. Based on references from the last decade, the content of the results presented in these researches and the key aspects of environmental management in a pig farm were analyzed. The most analyzed issues are waste and wastewater management, environmental impact assessments, resource conservation, environmental legislation and pollution control presented together with improvement solutions, while sustainable development is absent, which leads us to conclude that meat production in pig farms must be adapted according to the degree of supportability of the natural environment. Following the monitoring of groundwater quality indices and soil quality where organic fertilizer was used, we found that the greatest groundwater pollution is caused by nitrites from liquid manure, through penetration into the soil, which are administered to increase agricultural production. Thus, we propose for implementation measures to adapt production to the supportability of the natural environment through codes of good practices, manure management, reducing the quantities of organic fertilizers and introducing modern technologies for managing quantities to preserve the natural environment unaltered.
