CURRENT AND POTENTIAL USE OF BIOMASS FOR ENERGY GENERATION IN THE REGION OF WARMIA AND MAZURY IN NORTH-EASTERN POLAND
Abstract
Biomass, a major renewable energy source, can be converted to biofuel. The Region of Warmia and Mazury in north-eastern Poland, which features extensive woodlands and farmlands, is a leader in biomass production and biomass use for energy generation. The Warmia and Mazury Energy Agency has developed, in collaboration with the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, a biomass energy strategy for 2010-2020. The strategy is consistent with the Polish Energy Policy and the national plan for the use of renewable energy sources, based on the results of studies investigating the use of biomass for energy purposes in 2000-2010. In 2010, renewable energy consumption in the analyzed area reached 7 743 TJ, which accounted for 10.78% of total energy consumption, including all sectors and energy carriers. Biomass energy accounted for 5 376 TJ, i.e. 69.43% of renewable energy consumption and 7.48% of total energy consumption. According to the proposed biomass energy strategy, the use of biomass for energy purposes will reach 10 484.400 TJ by 2020, thus implying an increase of 5 108.400 TJ (over 95%) relative to 2010.
