SOURCE SPECTRAL PARAMETERS OF MODERATE EARTHQUAKES IN ALBANIA
Abstract
We analyze source spectra of 30 moderate earthquakes (M ? 4.0), occurred in Albania during the period 2009-2015, with the aim to estimate their dynamic source parameters. Using broadband seismic records (BB) of Albanian Seismological Network (ASN), along with those from other regional ones, data representative of local tectonics of Albania, are selected. To achieve the displacement source spectra S(f) of S-wave, we adopted the Brune ?-square model, after correcting for instrument response and path effects. Obtained results show variations of the stress drop and source dimensions, in the range 10 ? ?? ? 297 bar and 0.5 ? r ? 1.7 km namely for reverse, thrust and backthrust sources, in the outer Ionian-Adriatic zone under a compressional regime; 2.0 ? ?? ? 225 bar and 0.4 ? r ? 0.9 km for normal sources of both Tropoja-Kukesi and Dibra-KorпїЅa inner zones, under an extensional regime; 44 ? ?? ? 110 bar and 0.5 ? r ? 1.4 km for normal with a strike-slip component sources in Lushnja-Dibra transversal zone. Results comply well with a previous study on source parameters of Albanian earthquakes based on strong motion records. They do support the occurrence of higher stress drop on thrust and back-thrust faults of the outer tectonic domain and lower ones on normal faults of the inner domain, characterized by a horst-graben tectonics. However, variations are observed along the Adriatic sector of the outer compressional zone, where low values are observed, coinciding with the continental collision border, as well as on the transversal zone of oblique faulting, revealing the tectonic complexity of Albania.
