Abstract

The present paper deals with an important issue for the present digital world, namely the quality control of the optic fiber used in transmitting the internet, television, landline or mobile telephony and other digital content connection. Romania, the country with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world, needs modern methods to test the fiber already in use, the one to be installed, as well as the welded connections between them. The paper presents the theoretical model of transmitting information through optic fiber and the possible problems to occur in manufacturing, in operation, when installing or when the connections are made. Experimental plans have been developed and presented to detect the most common types of possible defects, both by destructive and non-destructive methods. In the end, the control parameters and investigation methods have been optimized so that all defects with the highest probability of occurrence are detected by using them. The conclusions of the paper review the quality conditions that fibers must meet for optimal signal transmission by studying the variation of their optical parameters.
