Abstract

Main pedestrian lines and nodes in urban structures need to be penetrated with water and greenery for the transformation into vital and ecological public spaces. The context of water and greenery provides to public spaces flow of landscape and flow of natural elements through the major arteries and meeting places of the city. Our research on the Danube riverfront in Bratislava and its recreational hinterland focused on implementing greening of the area, the zone in contact with the river, landscape modelling, and the city's climate preparedness with an emphasis on public spaces. Urban planners and landscape designers based their methods of implementation of landscape planning and ecological principles into student urban design on the systematic dual consultation of student concepts. Student’s projects have confirmed the importance of transforming the area into a meandering Danube landscape, the contact of the river with new areas and riverfront. We based the steps of the conceptual design on parallel consultation and transformation of the waterless terrain south of Bratislava into a meandering Danube landscape, into new contacts of river branches with new urban nodes and lines. We led new localities step by step to the greening of urban structures, supplemented by the blue-green infrastructure. Case studies followed from the old port in the center of Bratislava through the new meandering southern city to the recreational structure of Danubia Park. Through these studies, the team explored the most effective way to design blue-green public spaces. This harmony of urban-landscape dual management methods was reflected in creating a new city area with ecological quality. The principles for protection against overheating, water regulation and the effects of climate change have been implemented in the proposals.
