DEVELOPMENT OF LEGISLATIVE REGULATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CRIME IN THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC
Abstract
Environmental safety has long been a much-discussed topic around the world. There are various local, state or even global organizations whose goal is to ensure environmental safety on the planet. Environmental security is also directly linked to environmental crime, which maps and punishes citizens who harm nature in any way. Each country has a different set of perceptions of environmental security and crime. In the Slovak Republic, there was a change in its understanding in 2018, if a proposal was submitted to re-evaluate the significance of offenses committed in this area. The main significance lies in the fact that while in the past these actions were taken as offenses since 2019, they have become criminal offenses. The aim of the paper will be to point out the paragraphs belonging to environmental crime as well as to find out the development of their number. Knowledge of the number of individual actions belonging to the group of environmental crime is necessary in order to know the most serious and numerous offenses. Based on the knowledge, we will better understand the reasons for changing the understanding of offenses from the mentioned offenses to criminal offenses. Given the number of offenses committed, we will deal with one of the eight self-governing regions of which the Slovak Republic is composed, namely the Zilina Region. As part of the statement, we will deal with, for example, the theft of wood or riding a cross-country motorcycle in the woods, but also other serious offenses committed by citizens towards nature, often unintentionally.
