SEISMOTECTONIC AND EARTHQUAKE HAZARD ANALYSIS FOR HAMADAN AREA
Abstract
This paper is devoted to a seismotectonic study and earthquake hazard assessment for the Hamadan area. The major faults, active faults and potential seismic sources as well as the moderate and large earthquakes in the region are identified and illustrated in a seismotectonic map. The appropriate attenuation laws are selected according to seismotectonic characteristics of the region and site geology of the area. A model of the earthquake sources are prepared and earthquake hazard analysis has been done for the area using an analysis point interval scale of 0.1Г— 0.1 geographical degrees. Finally, Iso-acceleration maps have been compiled afterwards for return periods of 50, 200, and 500 years. According to the result of this research, in the region there are some high active faults. Some of these faults have produced a number of moderate and destructive earthquakes in the past centuries. Base ob the hazard analyses, Hamadan area could be divided into VI zones from earthquake hazard point of view. Earthquake hazard is very high in south-west, medium and low in center, high in north-western, very low in north-east, and critical around the Nahavand earthquake fault located in the south-west.
