Abstract

With the growing number of cars in Russia over the last years, the number of gas stations has several times increased, and the range of oil products has greatly changed. At present gasoline should provide reliable and efficient engineпїЅs work; it mustnпїЅt change its composition and characteristics during long-term storage; mustnпїЅt damage reservoirs, fuel related components, industrial rubber articles; should have effective volatility and hydrocarbon composition; should provide non-detonating stable fuel combustion process. Gasoline environmental safety (decreasing toxicity of exhaust gases) is guaranteed by its meeting toxicity standards for gasoline пїЅEuro-5пїЅ and пїЅEuro-6пїЅ. The paper analyses gasoline quality used in Chelyabinsk against national standard (GOST). The research was conducted in the accredited laboratory for the fuel brands under study. To assess gasoline quality we defined such indices as: fraction content, octane number, saturated vapour pressure, density, copper plate test, sulfur content. Nine gasoline samples from three city gas stations were analysed. Three samples showed high sulfur content. Sulfur content in gasoline affects fuel acidity, exhaust system and its corrosive resistance. This reduces catalyst life and adversely affects the purification of exhaust gases. Thus, the use of gasoline with a high sulfur content is potentially hazardous for air
