Abstract

Waste recycling and the circular economy are among the most important issues in the European Union strategies. Because Romania has yet to meet many requirements of the European Commission?s policies, there have been opened several infringement proceedings against our country for pollution, wood management, and waste management. In May 2018, the European Commission sent a letter urging Romania to take major actions, such as: to close, seal, and ecologically restore 48 illegal landfills, and to comply with the judgment of the European Court of Justice from October 2018. The paper is in this direction, our researches regarding waste management from Boto?ani County, Romania. Waste management represents the most important component of sanitation services and refers to activities of collection, transport, treatment, recovery and their disposal. Delays in the implementation of integrated waste management systems occurred either due to the complexity of projects or to delayed or even gridlocked tenders for such investments. The two major categories of analyzed waste are: municipal and assimilated waste from trade, industry or institutions, constructions and demolition waste, and from urban treatment plants (sludge), and production waste. There are no selective collection systems for biodegradable waste in Boto?ani County, in order to capitalize on recyclable materials only to a very small extent. From the components of this waste category, approx. 40% represents recyclable materials, of which about 20% have high chances of recovery, not being contaminated. The largest percent of recyclable materials is eliminated by storage, thus losing large amounts of secondary raw materials and energy sources. Our research relied negative aspects regarding rural waste management, the way in which their collection and storage affects the environment and human health. In conclusions, we presented and recommended solutions to improve waste management system for Boto?ani County.
