Abstract

Noble metallic nanoparticles, silver (Ag) and gold (Au) especially, are very important in modern nanotechnology due to their various applications in medicine, pharmacy and diagnosis especially due to their proven antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. Both silver (AgNPs) and gold (AuNPs) nanoparticles can be synthesized using conventional or unconventional methods and, in recent years, the unconventional methods that rely on the biosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles from different plants and plant parts are constantly gaining importance because they are eco-friendly, they do not require the use of toxic chemicals and do not produce hazardous products. The biosynthesis involves mixing aqueous extracts of numerous plants with silver nitrate solution (in the case of AgNPs) or with tetrachloroauric solution (in the case of AuNPs). Pulmonaria officinalis, commonly known as Lungwort, has been cultivated for centuries as a medicinal plant useful in various chest diseases and is particular useful in chronic bronchitis and asthma. This paper describes the biosynthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles using aqueous extract of Pulmonaria officinalis following two different routes: at room temperature, in the dark, for 24 hours and upon heating and constant stirring for 30 minutes. The capacity of Pulmonaria officinalis to bioreduce the metal ions was investigated using spectral techniques (UV-Vis, FTIR) and the results are characteristic to AgNPs as well as to AuNPs. The nanometer size of the biosynthesized metallic nanoparticles was investigated by means of diffraction light scattering (DLS) measurements and X-ray diffraction recordings were also performed proving that both AgNPs and AuNPs are obtained.
