Abstract

The Bohemian-Moravian Highlands represents an area rich in the abundance of old mining structures of various origin, like e.g. adits, shafts, paddy fields, quarries and age from medieval to modern. For example, Jihlava ore district is well-known for its medieval mining and processing of polymetallic silver ores. The locations of some old mining sites are well documented, however, the knowledge about many of them was lost over time. As a possible indicator of the existence of the old mining sites, spring water analysis could be applied because of the specific chemistry of mine drainage. For these reasons, several samples of spring water and/or already known mine drainage water have been collected in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands and their physical and chemical properties have been determined using a combination of analytical and instrumental techniques such as optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma to measure the abundance of selected heavy elements like lead, copper, cadmium, zinc, etc., and ion exchange chromatography for the quantification of water soluble cations and anions like chlorides, nitrates, and sulfates. The collected data show that analysis of water is a robust indicator of possible mining activities in the region. The obtained results will help in the complex multidisciplinary description of old mining sites that represent a unique evidence of the development of our society and in understanding the environmental impacts of historical mining on the present-day landscape.
