THE ANALYSIS OF LAND COVER CHANGE IN CROATIA BASED ON CORINE MODEL
Abstract
The land cover changes of the area result from both nature-induced activities that are sometimes indirectly caused by human influence, and direct human-induced activities such as land use change, deforestation, city expansions, and other. Therefore, the land cover change can indicate climate changes of the geographic area as well as the change of the socio-economic factors. This study aims at analyzing the land cover change over the territory of the Republic of Croatia from 1990 onwards. The study is based on CORINE (COoRdination of INformation on the Environment) land cover model of the European Union that was initiated in 1985 with the reference year 1990 and model updates in 2000, 2006, and 2012. As a member state of the European Union, Croatia updates the land cover database within the programs conducted by the Croatian Environment Agency. The land cover is categorized within the 40 categories with the spatial resolution of 3 arc-seconds (approximately 90 meters). The changes are monitored by the satellite imagery analysis and updates on maps of the land use or land cover produced by different authorities. This research encompasses the land cover analysis and the analysis of its change over the territory of Croatia with the focus on the areas of significant economic, natural, and research interest such as the coastal areas of the mainland and islands, and the areas of the major cities. Based on conducted analyses, insight on the relation of the land cover change and economic factors is given.
